De announcement van Figment 2 in de Indie World eerder deze week was een goede reminder dat ik deze nog had.
Topdown, zeldastyle hack n slash en puzzelen. Korte, simpele game; In een middag uit te spelen.
Maar de setting in iemand's verwarde geest en lekkere muziek maken het best de moeite waard.

Ys Origin (Switch)


Oorspronkelijk kwam Ys Origins uit voor Windows XP maar later is de game naar andere platformen gepoort. Je kan het spel met 3 verschillende karakters uitspelen waar Yunica 1 van was, maar de andere twee karakters heb ik nog niet geprobeerd. Het spel is wel leuk genoeg dat ik het waarschijnlijk nog wel eens op pak.

Castlevania: The Adventure (GameBoy, gespeeld op Switch)


Even een stukje historie: Castlevania The Adventure was de allereerste Castlevania die ik ooit heb gespeeld. Ik herinner me een vakantie tientallen jaren geleden waarbij ik ziek in bed lag en de GameBoy leende van mijn neefjes. Ik had wel eens van de serie gehoord of gelezen, misschien gezien op Power Play ofzo, maar dit was voor het eerst dat ik met de game in aanraking kwam. Het beviel niet echt en het zou pas op de Gameboy Advance zijn dat ik weer een deel uit de serie probeerde. Ook heb ik Castlevania Rebirth op de Wii gespeeld wat een re-imagination zou moeten zijn van The Adventure, maar misschien afgezien van het verhaal is dat eigenlijk een compleet andere game.

Dankzij de Castlevania Collection die ik voor 4 euro uit de eShop had opgepikt gaf ik Castlevania The Adventure een nieuwe poging, en man, wat een trage game. De eerste drie levels zijn echt super simpel en dan komt er ineens een level met pikkers, pikkers en nog eens pikkers. Gelukkig heeft de game save-states want anders had ik denk ik niet genoeg uithoudingsvermogen voor dit soort dingen. Dracula was nog best een pittige baas maar op een gegeven moment viel zijn patroon op en toen ging hij zonder moeite neer.

Een aardige game om 'af te strepen' maar het is absoluut de minst leuke Castlevania die ik tot nu toe gespeeld heb.

Op de valreep voeg ik nog even twee laatste titels toe voor mij. 2021 was weliswaar een backlog-jaar voor mij maar ik heb maar 3 retro games gespeeld, en allemaal in mijn kerstvakantie.

Castlevania (NES, gespeeld op Switch via de Castlevania Collection)


Eerder in dit topic speelde ik Castlevania voor de GameBoy uit maar ondertussen was ik al een tijdje bezig met de veel langere en uitdagendere Castlevania op de NES. Een klassieker zonder meer, maar niet zonder frustrerende elementen. Wat ben ik blij dat ik save states had want anders had ik de game waarschijnlijk nooit uitgespeeld uit frustratie; van geraakt worden en dwars door een trap heen het scherm uitvallen tot die eerste vorm van Dracula in het laatste eindbaasgevecht. Als ik dan steeds weer complete stages opnieuw zou moeten doen dan zou ik er gek van worden. Maar nu ik de game in z'n geheel een keer heb doorgespeeld en wetende dat je oneindig veel continues hebt denk ik dat ik het spel met genoeg tijd en doorzettingsvermogen ook op de NES wel uit zou kunnen spelen.

Gunbird 2 (Arcade, gespeeld op Switch)


Ik heb vanochtend nog een paar potjes Gunbird 2 gedaan om tot 25 uitgespeelde games in dit jaar te kopen. Gespeeld op de laagste moeiljkheidsgraad is ie goed te doen. Twee game overs gehad maar met de laatste continue haalde ik het alsnog. Vorig jaar speelde ik deel 1 maar ik denk dat deel 2 mijn favoriet is, en sowieso een van mijn favoriete shmups die ik heb gespeeld. De setting, een soort mengelmoes tussen steampunk, robots en historisch Japan, is erg aantrekkelijk en het speelt lekker vlot.

Ik ben slecht in die game maar vind hem wel vet. Zou me nooit gelukt zijn zonder de code.

Hoewel ik daar wel een mening over heb, staat er in de regels niets over het gebruik van cheats en ik ga niet twee uur voor de deadline moeilijk doen over één punt.

Zo, dat was me het jaartje backlog wegwerken wel. In ons eerste jaar won Zach met 52 punten, maar daar dit jaar hebben liefst vijf mensen (inclusief Zach zelf) hoger gescoord dan dat. Normaliter scoren slechts één of twee mensen meer dan 50 punten, dus petje af!

Het voorgaande record was 68 punten door Nutsy-Gutsy in 2019, maar daar zijn dit jaar twee personen overheen gegaan! Ikk had al een prachtige score van 72 punten, maar Shenglong83 wist een verbluffende score van 96 punten te halen! Hij is dan ook met afstand dé Backlog Overwinnaar van 2021! Gefeliciteerd! Op de tweede plaats vinden we ikk die met 72 punten ook over het oude record heen gaat. De top drie wordt gecompleteerd door twee personen, KillingRaptor en TheDarkWanderer, die beide een zeer respectabele 62 punten hebben gescoord!

Iedereen weer hartstikke bedankt voor het meedoen! Na vier edities van dit topic, laat ik jullie voor 2022 in de ongetwijfeld kundige handen van TheDarkWanderer die aangeboden heeft om het stokje van mij over te nemen. Ik ga namelijk een vrij druk jaar in met o.a. heel veel stage lopen, onderzoek doen en lesgeven, dus ik kan niet beloven dat ik regelmatig actief zal zijn komend jaar (sterker nog, dat was dit jaar al geen groot succes ). Uiteraard zal ik wel zelf meedoen, maar ik verwacht absoluut geen topscores zoals ze dit jaar bereikt zijn.
